Duncan Gillespie
With nearly 20 years of experience, Duncan is an established solicitor specialising in all aspects of competition law.
Duncan has extensive experience advising companies under investigation by UK, EU and other competition authorities for alleged participation in cartels or abuse of dominance. Duncan also regularly advises clients on structuring commercial arrangements to comply with competition law, as well as representing clients in obtaining merger clearance on behalf of those clients from numerous competition authorities around the world. Duncan’s recent projects include working with authorities in the United States, Israel, Brazil, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Tanzania.
A focus of Duncan’s work is State aid law, advising both public sector bodies and private companies under investigation for allegedly receiving unlawful aid. He has obtained EU State aid clearance in a number of large scale cases, including for a publicly funded deployment of broadband networks in the UK and the UK Film Council’s Digital Screen Network project. Duncan also works with universities and research institutions on the application of State aid law to collaborative research projects with industrial partners and local authorities on ensuring that economic regeneration projects are state-aid compliant.
With a degree in Mining and Petroleum Engineering Duncan has a particular interest in the application of competition law to the energy and technology sectors.
Duncan regularly comments on competition law matters in the media and has contributed to a book to be published by Hart Publishing in September 2016 on the newly enacted Hong Kong Competition Ordinance.
